Our History

The History of the beginnings of our church and how we became what we are today.

Behind every vision there is a man, and behind every man there is His spirit. They are tied together with a line that stretches through the eons of time back to God. The line is in the blood which is Christ. The vision of the body of Christ, which is at Voice of Deliverance, was born in Charles Hawkins.

Reverend Hawkins was given a vision of a ministry that would touch the lives of multitudes through Evangelistic Crusades, Radio and the teaching ministry. After answering the call of God to preach the Gospel in 1971, Rev. Hawkins began an intense study of the Word of God, received his credentials and ministered with World Renown Evalagilist throughout the country. In 1978 the Voice of Deliverance Crusade Ministry was founded and later incorporated in 1980. For six years Reverend Hawkins touched the Nation with six radio stations in different parts of the country. Many souls were saved, healed and set free by the power of God's Word though crusades across the Nation and his radio broadcasts.

In 1984 Reverend Hawkins recieved a visitation of the Holy Spirit and was anointed with a special anointing to pray for the sick. Miracles began happening in every meeting. Invitations to minister began coming from all over the country. Reverend Hawkins traveled to Haiti and Mexico with God's healing power.

In June 1986 Reverend Hawkins was led by the Spirit to change the focus of the Voice of Deliverance Crusade Ministry from radio to missions. Rev. Fedeau Pierre, founder of Deliverance School and Orphanage in Port-auPrince, Haiti, was led by the spirit to come under the Voice Of Deliverance Crusade Ministry.

Since the change in focus to missions, the church has been feeding and clothing 160 childeren daily in the school and also providing full time sanctuary for 25 childeren in the Orphanage. The Church was able to send ew 1987 Ford Escort station wagon to Haiti to help with transportation and also purchased land that is now being used for harvesting vegetables and fruits for the School and Orphanage. We have also been involved in Pastoral Conferences, Women's Ministry, and Nationwide Crusades in Haiti for the past five years. Most recently, we have completed building a second level onto the present facility in Port-auPrince, Haiti.

In 1988 Rev. Hawkins was given a Divine Commission by God to build an Army Of Believers who know that the NAME OF JESUS really works. He and his wife, Jean, accepted the call to Pastor and formulated the Voice of Delivereance New Covenant Evangelistic Church. The Church began in June 1988 in the basement of Rev. and Mrs. Hawkin's home at 808 Summer Avenue in Minotola N.J.  with approximently 20 members, most of them being the childern of five families.

The Church almost immediately began to grow and another place was needed to acccomodate the influx of people. In August of the same year we moved into our first building at 106 Atlantic Avenue in Minotola. At $850.00  per month rent and 1-1/2 month security deposit, it was a huge step for our new, but growing church.

People began to come to this old firehouse we converted into a church.  Being led by the Spirit Rev. Hawkins purchased 200 chairs. Knowing that the facility could only hold about 120 people. Little did he know then, with only 50 members, that God was going to fill all of those 200 chairs before he would move from that location. However the day did come after only 4 short years. It became obvious that they would need a larger facility. The Lord had impressed on Rev. Hawkins 2 years  prior to start looking around for a new facility. Learning that the Chestnut Assembly of God Church at 1413 Chestnut Ave. in Vineland was for sale, Rev. Hawkins was directed by the Spirit to have V.O.D. start believing God for that new facility. Even though the task looked impossible, and finances said it could not be done, with a congregation of only seventy five members at this time, God said to Rev. Hawkins "I give this facility to Voice of Deliverance New Covenant Church".

When we first inquired about the building the Assemblies of God had the facility listed for sale at One Million Dollars ($1,000,000). We started to believe God that a fare price could be negotiated. After a year we finally agreed on a price of Four Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand Dollars ($475,000). Now the task began to find a funding source that would lend us the money. God blessed us that year and we saved thirty five thousand dollars ($35,000). However, the next year would be filled with disappointment as we were turned down by lender after lender. It looked like this vision would not happen.

In the natural realm, the facts presented some obstacles which seemed impossible to overcome:

    - a national recession.

    - inability of banks to lend money.

    - a small congregation of 75 members.

    - only being established for 2 years.

But we knew that "with God all things are possible" Math. 19:26. Confirmation came through Prophesy, God said, "I give you this building for my Glory & Honor".

Lewis Atkinson, an Ex-Bank Vice President and financial consultant, while passing the Assemblies of God Church was directed by the Spirit of God to help the congregation that was trying to purchase the facility. We were at a dead end, no where to go. God sent his man to lend us a helping hand. Throwing himself into the seemingly impossible task he tirelessly worked for months putting together a package that would be acceptable to the lending institutions.

Armed with his untiring devotion and with God's help he was able to secure a commitment from the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Bridgeton. After two years of standing on what God had said to the little congregation, on Jun 18, 1993 we went to settlement on our facility at 1413 Chestnut Avenue. The property has a main building housing the main sanctuary, a smaller sanctuary, a nursery, 8 class rooms, 4 offices, a kitchen, and storage room. Also on the property is a parsonage, a warehouse, and room to grow. From this facility Voice of Deliverance will be able to continually expand its ministries. Reaching into the communtity with God's word and promise, sharing God's love and healing power.

We invite you to become a part of the church today and a piece of its history tomorrow.
